Consistency and Other Hobgoblins

Consistency and Other Hobgoblins

“When you find yourself arguing … about consistency, they’re apt to quote Emerson incorrectly: “Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds…” The real quote is “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” …use consistency intelligently, and, though it may not show off [your] creativity as well, in the long run it makes users happier.” – Joel Spolsky

This has both infuriated me and been the source of many a work battle. For reasons unknown, there are those who simply refuse to cleave to convention, even when there’s no reason not to. I’ll have to try to remember the actual quote.

Lord knows, I’ve worked with plenty a fool. Can be done, if you’re adept at keeping them from causing damage.

Interestingly, my most favorite Apple documentation file is the Human Interface Guidelines.

The rest flows from there and anyone who’s coded iOS knows that it flows *everywhere*.
